We’re waiting patiently here for new spring arrivals – any minute now! Hopefully by next week we’ll have boxes of light sweaters and tees, great transitional pieces in airy colors that look forward to the warmer days ahead. In the meantime, we’ve got an amazing Design Lab collection in progress to reveal in March (sneak peek above), featuring tea-dyed muslin and some amazing vintage mustard yellow wool that was very graciously donated to us.

The annual Short North Winter Sale is coming up this weekend – January 22nd-24th. We’ll have some amazing markdowns along with the rest of the neighborhood, and it looks like the weather will stay out of the freezing and in the comfortably cold temperatures. We have a sneak-preview of our sale going on now, in-store and on our website, so be sure to take a look and see if there’s anything you need to snag first.

Also, our temporary winter hours will begin Monday, January 4th. We’ll be hunkering down and closing an hour early during the dark cold nights in January and February. New hours are 11am to 6pm Monday-Saturday, while Sunday will remain 12-5. Once spring starts to blossom again, we’ll switch back to the usual. The first week of December is turning out to be a busy one!
We’ve got a great holiday window this year. The theme is a fairy tale story about a magical maiden and her hand-crafted dress, featuring our new tea-dyed, knee-length Floral Fete dress. Every element of the window has been done by hand, down to the lovingly hand-painted white lettering. It’s a magnificent team effort that is all Substance, through and through.
And speaking of hand-crafted, our 2nd Annual Aspiring Designer contest unveiling is almost upon us. Join us this Thursday, December 3rd, from 5:30-7pm to browse our three finalists designs and discover the winner. Last but not least, Holiday Hop is just around the corner, this Saturday, December 5th. Santa will be waiting nearby at Buttles & High, and live music will be playing throughout the Short North (did I hear something about hot chocolate? mmmm). Just writing to remind everyone not to forget your friendly Short North retailers this weekend. Who needs/wants to wrestle other shoppers at 4am for electronics, when you can shop on the internet at your leisure… and then go for a pleasant and tactile shopping stroll at a normal hour of the day? Make your gift shopping a pleasure, and not a state of panic. Plus, the neighborhood holiday window displays are going up, so there’s even more to look at! A sneak peek of ours, in-progress… we’re immensely proud of it this year.

This month has been wonderful so far! Sunny days, cool evenings, and lovely colors everywhere. Our holiday tidbits are flowing in, including cozy scarves and glittering jewelry (none of which will break the bank). Our Levi’s are re-stocked, our final Indigenous Designs and Stewart+Brown fall shipments are here, and we’re gleefully consuming hot chocolate and delicious cupcakes. Good thing we love drapey tees and sweaters.
Speaking of lovely things, check out the photo above. It’s our Ziggurat Bag from Melie Bianco, from an amazing Short North retail collaboration effort: a cohesive lookbook. Below, a plaid silk shawl from Nusantara handsomely blows our minds. Taking bits here and samples there, it pulls us all together for a wonderfully stylish glance into the fall windows of the entire neighborhood. Each item is tagged as to the shop it came from, giving those of us who always frequent the same boutiques an imperative to shop around for the perfect thing to complete a look. A ton of work was put into it, for beautiful results. Thanks to everyone who participated and worked on it!

Soho Wrap by Indigenous Designs - in Ruby, $108

Ask most anyone here at Substance about OSU football, and you’ll likely be met with a blank stare. Half of us don’t even realize there’s a game going on until we’re suddenly surrounded by people clad head-to-toe in scarlet & grey. For those like-minded individuals out there, we’d like to give you a shout-out and a heads up – one of the best times to go out on the town in Columbus is during an OSU game. While everyone else is enthusiastically holed up in the stadium or in front of the TV, you can sneak out and enjoy a relatively quiet, low-key day in restaurants and boutiques alike. Not many people park in the Short North for home games, so you’re in the clear for a parking spot (especially for us, as we’ve got a lot behind the store).

We’ve done a huge floor change! Our Design Lab workspace is now conveniently located in the front window of the store, with the Trim Shop and all our in-house collection pieces right nearby. Now everyone’s got a great view on what we’re working on. Plus, now we’ve got shoes right up front, and a great seating area (fully stocked with WWD magazines) to lounge in upstairs while browsing the sale department.
We’re expecting a ton of great product next week, so keep your eyes peeled… we’re hoping for more Melie Bianco, 49 Square Miles, Sublet, and an epic shipment of Spiewak fall/winter jackets any minute now!
