I learned in early May that I was named a finalist for the National Association of Women Business Owners (NAWBO) Columbus, OH Chapter, Visionary Award. Each year, the NAWBO Columbus Visionary Award honors one Central Ohio woman business owner who has achieved success with her business while making notable contributions to her community, her industry and to initiatives for other women in business.
Why is this acknowledgement so special?
I am humbled by the acknowledgement because I know more than anyone else that my 9 year old company, Substance, would not be what it is today were it not for the dedication, hard work and creative contributions of my team. It’s an honor that shines a light on all challenges that I’ve overcome with my team at my side and all the milestones that Substance has achieved. The women I work with are an incredible group that make beautiful things and they make beautiful things happen even when I am not there.
It’s high time to acknowledge the individuals because they’ve all had a hand in my becoming a finalist for this award. Each of them has so much passion and creative talent that I will introduce them one at a time through our blog. For those blog readers who live locally, you’ve probably met them in your visits to the store at 783 North High, but you may not know their back stories, why I wanted them to be a part of my dream and what they contribute to the company.

I would like you to meet Cate.
I met Cate in May of last year. We chatted over coffee for a while. Cate’s easy to talk to and with a warm, kind spirit: important traits, I believe, if you are working in any type of customer service, but essential in our storefront. Here’s what you may not know: she writes short stories, has two well loved cats and a BA in theatre, and just finished her Master of Fine Arts in Creative Writing. Let’s not forget she designs, illustrates and sews beautifully finished pieces for our exclusive DesignLab Collection™. She can also rock a Feral Childe frock like nobody’s business. If you follow our blog, you’ve heard from Cate as she’s written most of the entries in the last year. As I share this, I shed a little tear. Soon we say goodbye to Cate. After a fully engaged, creatively charged year with us, she will leave Columbus soon for the next chapter of her life in a new city. It’s a bitter sweet farewell though. We know we will stay in touch and we will hopefully hear more from her as a future guest on our blog. Cate’s creativity and weighty individual contributions to our style in words and fashion have set a standard that we will be mightily challenged to continue. Thank you Cate!
