Donovan Jacket, by Sublet

Donovan Jacket, by Sublet

Stewart + Brown, Spiewak, and Sublet – three of our favorite things!

Sublet is pictured above, in the form of the beautifully structured and NY-produced Donovan Jacket.  Cropped, flannel-lined, and perfect.  Our 2nd delivery of Stewart + Brown includes lovely feminine layering pieces in muted fall tones (like the Virginia Blouse), crafted using their usual impossibly soft organic cotton.   Last but not least is Spiewak… we’ve got the down-filled Warren Jacket in 5 colors, the green-and-woolly tweed Chambers Coat, and the storm-weathering Everett Coat in black (perfect for city girls everywhere).  With still more to come, we’re looking forward to a wonderful fall.

Fall Duet: A Sneak Peek

Fall Duet: A Sneak Peek

A lot is going on here at Substance… new collections are in the works, new items are arriving regularly, and a large volume of coffee is being consumed.  Here’s the run-down:

  • Number one on the list, our awesome designer and super-seamstress Betsy is off getting married!  Look forward to getting bombarded with some great photos in the next few weeks – all her bridesmaids are wearing Floral Fete dresses.   It’s a hand-crafted affair, from the brides’ dress down to the decorations.  Congratulations, Betsy!
  • Second, Maddie is hard at work on our upcoming collection, Fall Duet.  Using our favorite hand-woven Ethiopian cotton fabric, she’s making reversible shrugs.   Pretty much everyone on staff has picked out a color combo that they can’t live without… so this looks like a collection we’re going to have to keep around for a while, if for no other reason than to outfit ourselves.  To pair with the shrugs, she’s taking some heavier weight cotton trousers from last season and cutting them down into the perfect pencil skirt in 3 great colors.  Look for Fall Duet in the next few weeks as well.  We promise to not wear our shrugs all at the same time.
  • Next up… we’ve gotten new fall product in, and a lot of it is eco-conscious.  Our first shipment of Stewart+Brown for the season arrived in the form of organic cotton knits, including the “I Love You” tee which is just about sold out!  Soft drapey bamboo knit blouses and dresses came from Two Star Dog, as well as a few new re-purposed leather handbags from Gilbert and Leona.  We love our little group of beautifully tailored grey-and-mustard cotton sheath dresses from Nougat.   Finally, an amazing transitional collection of tunic tops and cropped dresses in cotton/silk blends from Trinity came yesterday.   Airy and light yet in rich fall color combos, they’re perfect to layer over your summery pieces.
  • Last but not least, Art Al Fresco is this weekend in the Short North.  An entire day of free public art – what’s not to love about that?

Fall has officially been welcomed at Substance… lightweight jackets, sweaters, and fall colors are sprinkled throughout the store. There’s also plenty of practical and colorful over-the-shoulder bags ready for all the teachers, students, and people who love to ride a bike or lug around a load.

And for those of you who love a deal, our sale racks are fluffed up in full force in preparation for Gallery Hop tomorrow, making way for all the sweet new fall merchandise we’re expecting soon.  We’ve got racks from all seasons, ranging from $49.99 all the way to $9.99(!).  There’s a lot of good office-friendly clothing on the $49.99 rack, too.  We’ve even got a little something for the fellas: our solitary menswear rack (it’s overflowing with organic cotton, by the way) is entirely marked down to the low, low price of $14.99.  Sorry guys – we’re phasing out our men’s department for now!

Lauren Boot, by Terra Plana

Lauren Boot, by Terra Plana

Our Terra Plana shoes are in!  There’s two styles to start out – the Lauren Boot (above) and the Juniper Heel.   We’re super-excited to have Terra Plana here @ Substance, as they’re an amazing eco-conscious line that always combines strangers-will-stop-you-on-the-street style with comfort, longevity, and every little detail a shoe connoisseur will squeal at.

Also new… fresh shipments of Lenora Dame vintage-inspired jewelry, Marissa B chunky gemstones, Sue London ballet flats, Melie Bianco handbags, and, of course, Painterly Tees.

Pure Knit Cardigans

Pure Knit Cardigans

You may be caught off guard as much as we were, seeing as how it’s a bright and sunny 90 degrees outside today… but we received our first shipment of fall this week, in the form of hand-knit cotton cardigans by Pure.  Which could come in handy now, if you’re sitting in a freezing office building looking forward to experiencing the sunny outdoors firsthand.  And come to think of it, we have new silver and gemstone jewelry from INaccessories too, and it all co-ordinates with the cardigans quite nicely.  Work wardrobe spruce-up, maybe?

May 30th, 2009

Being the Design & Merchandise Manager at Substance, Ayisha is usually loaded with responsibilities.   It’s seldom that she gets to spend time making pretty things.  The last couple of weeks we’ve tried to free her up so some of her bottled up genius could flow into design preparation for an in store event we’ve got coming up next month.

The pile of things she’s created make me smile – exciting color combinations, upbeat stitches and tactile features, all fun to look at and touch.  They are cheerful designs and so great in their representation of new and lovely uses for our cotton tee material.  Great timing!  Our newest shipment of tees will be here next week.  The new tees are all organic cotton and so begin our transition away from conventional cotton tee production.  Why?  The short answer is because we can and it’s better for the environment.

June 6-12th is our Tee Shirt Trade In event.  Bring in one tee you’ve purchased from us in the last few years.  Trade it in for 25% off the price of one of our new organic cotton tees.  The tees you bring in will not go to waste.   We’ll continue to give Ayisha her creative space to make pretty things out of tees.

We got in so much product last week, I didn’t even get a chance to sit down and type about it. Shown above are organic cotton tops by Trinity Ya-Da; there’s also bamboo knit tops, bottoms, and dresses by Two Star Dog, sheer silk blouses and seersucker cropped pants by Interlud, and all sorts of summery woven print tops and dresses by the socially-conscious brand Mata Traders. Mary janes and golden gladiator shoes by OTBT, more long paper beads from Acholi, and woven hemp belts and sun hats for summer. Last but not least, today marked the arrival of the beautiful sustainable line we’ve been looking forward to for months… Chemline.

We’ve had a busy week so far, full of a lot of great color. New Melie Bianco came (the front-cinched shoulder bag is shown above, $89), and we got in a great big refill on our popular Levi’s wide-leg jeans and handwoven cotton scarves. A new take on one of our old classics arrived today, in the form of 3-button wraps from Pure, with a simple knit-and-purl effect that gives them a lighter weight and a subtle stripe. And finally… more comfy bamboo-cotton blend tops from HTnaturals are in (the scarf is shown below, $22)!

We received some finalized samples of our new organic private label tees in the mail yesterday. The colors – officially dubbed Stone, Black, White, and Sea Blue – are wonderful, and the fabric is thick and soft. Look for them soon in long-sleeve crewnecks and v-necks, and half-sleeve v-necks as well.

Happy Earth Day! Today’s Substance staff is all taking turns walking down to Northstar for veggie burgers… I can’t wait…
