Does your summer wardrobe need a little lift?  We’ve got you covered!  We’re celebrating the impending arrival of summer with a 3-day Summer Style Infusion event, at our Cincinnati location May 31st through June 2nd.

Throughout this weekend long event we’re sharing FREE treats with you from some local creatives we love.  For the kick off during Final Friday, May 31st, from 6-10pm local make-up artist, Katie Renfrow will be in our store sharing some simple summer make up tips and trends. We’re having local foodie, Carolyn Wallace of The Perfect Brew provide delicious, light, organic summer refreshments Friday and Saturday.   And on Sunday we’ll have treats from vegan baked goods goddess, Mary Beth King of Sweet Peace Bakery.  You’ll also enjoy a special discount on any Substance purchases you make during our 3-day Summer Style Infusion event.

As is our mission to help you find the clothes you keep, for this event, we invite you to bring in something from your current wardrobe and our stylists will help you figure out five new ways to wear it this summer.  Whether it’s a wedding, a vacation or summer festivals that you are looking forward to, we can help you find the perfect all occasion dresses, tops and skirts or just update some pieces you already own.  So go peruse your closet for that one item that you plan to enjoy again this summer and bring it along with you to our 3-day Summer Style Infusion event.

Invite your girlfriends and we’ll see you there.

Our Cincinnati friends can now shop in our Over-the-Rhine store front 7 days-a-week. Thank you for your patience while we were finding our rhythm and building our team. Substance 7 days-a-week would not be possible without the help our newest associate, Renee Harris. Renee started with us this week, full time, as our resident Stylist and Merchandising Assistant.

Most of you may know Ms. Harris already as she’s been a familiar face here at Substance and an OTR resident. And she’s earned her title, joining us after several years of experience in the fashion industry, styling Cincinnati locals. She lives and breathes our balanced and sustainable use of the fashion medium, helping women build their wardrobes, thoughtfully, with the right pieces to express their individual style. We love her no-nonsense approach with an eye expertly tuned to great, timeless design.

Renee knows how to work the clothes you keep.

We welcome her to the Substance team.

It’s hard to believe that next week marks our 7th year in business as an indie, brick and mortar retailer.  Appropriately, we mark the occasion with an unveiling of our Collar Me Pretty Design Lab Collection™.  It’s our  52nd unveiling and a visual escapade that made exquisite use of gemstones, baubles, beads and trinkets from all broken jewelry and supplier defects we’ve accumulated through the years.   While repurposing  this bountiful treasure chest, our designers dedicated countless hours to the layout, design and epic hand bead work on a collection of detachable Peter Pan style collars.  They also recycled the soft brushed cotton broadcloth from our Grace shirts to make timeless, silk lined shifts that showcase the brilliant detail of each masterpiece.   We are thrilled to share this collection with you.

Please join us to toast our 7th year during unveiling events in both stores next week.

We all have one of those pieces in our closet: the halter-top onesie, the red pants that just needed a little tailoring… You bought it with the best intentions, but just haven’t figured out how or where to wear it. So it sits, maybe still with the tags on, just collecting dust. You’d get rid of it, but you don’t want to contribute to the 68 lbs of clothing that the average US citizen adds to landfills each year. Sound familiar?

If you’re looking for a guilt-free way to find a new home for that piece, and perhaps find something a little more you in the process, you’re in luck.

Introducing the Substance Style Exchange!

During March and April, we’re launching this quarterly event to help minimize that mostly non-biodegradable waste from polluting our environment—and also to provide our tribe of environmentally conscious fashionistas a place to trade a new or gently used and relevant wardrobe item. Attend a Substance Style Exchange and find your piece a new home in the closet of someone with more immediate plans for those pieces that just haven’t found their place in your day-to-day wardrobe.

Here’s how it works.

Drop off one new or gently used item you plan to exchange at your closest Substance location anytime during the two weeks leading up to the event. Your item should be clean and ready to wear. We will register and place your piece on the preview rack, allowing you and our other Substance patrons to peruse the items that will be available for trade during the event.

At the Style Exchange Event, we’ll have refreshments and loads of great product, alongside our über creative team of stylists to help you execute your trade.

• You may chose one item from the exchange, regardless of whether or not your item is chosen by someone else.

• If your item is not chosen by another event patron, you can take it home at the end of the event or we will donate it to either Goodwill or our local chapter of Dress for Success.

• If your item is chosen by another patron you receive a 20% discount on all your Substance purchases during the event.

• Two-way trades are not required so if someone desires to take home the item you bring, you are not obligated to take home what that person brought to the exchange.

• All Style Exchange Event attendees receive special pricing on Substance merchandise purchased during the event.

So after you finish reading this, go take a good look at your closet. Develop your wish list of what you need for spring and set aside that fabulous handbag, blouse, dress or necklace that you can live without. With exception to the price you paid for the item that you plan to exchange, participation in this event is absolutely FREE, which means you have the chance to find one or a few great new pieces for your spring wardrobe while doing minimal harm to your wallet and the environment.

Mark your calendars for the next Style Exchange event at the Substance location near you.

Short North: Thursday, April 18th, 6-9pm

See you there!

Substance OTR

We can’t wait to see you here.

After signing the official lease on our second Substance storefront in June, my team and I exercised forgotten muscles as we scrubbed and applied several gallons of white paint to the hundred-year-old walls of 1435 Main Street, in Over the Rhine, Cincinnati. In July, we wrestled with a clunky new Point of Sale system that, despite the complimentary tech support, was determined to give us headaches. But now it’s August: we’re stocked, we’re staffed, and we’re ready for you.

I can’t wait to see you here.

I had forgotten how humbling the hard work of opening a store front can be. I’ve been building this business for ten years, and while the work at times has been mentally and physically exhausting, it’s work I love, and my dreams and visions for what this business will become thrill and inspire me to get out of bed every day to work harder. The reward comes from the support around me: my family I cherish, who so often see less of me than the store does, and the community of Cincinnati, who has offered a wealth of helping hands. I’ve received an overwhelmingly warm welcome from the residents and business community here in Over the Rhine.

They can’t wait to see you here.

Thursday, August 16th marks a celebration of Substance in Cincinnati, but it signifies, for me, so much more: a moment to give thanks to everyone who has contributed to all that Substance has accomplished, and an opportunity to welcome you to Over the Rhine, a community that Substance is honored to join. Our beautiful second location occupies the ground floor of a building erected in 1900, From our two giant bay windows on Main we get to greet and meet the many residents that reside all around us.

We’ll sip wine, nibble treats and be entertained by popular, local jazz guitarist, Benjamin Thomas. All the while enjoy after hours shopping with special pricing on our newest fall arrivals. There’s more… You’ll have the opportunity to meet an inspiring Cincinnati based jewelry artist I’ve met. Molly Sullivan will be showing “metalbark,” her handmade collection that combines natural elements with industrial ones to create unique, primarily re-purposed and exceptionally wearable art.

Join us Thursday, August 16th from 5 till 8pm.

We can’t wait to see you here.
